Enter SoundThinking™

SoundThinking™ specializes in the Public Safety market. They operate more than 100 urban gunshot systems in most major cities in the US. Their systems compute gunshot locations using identical means as described above. An array of sensors is deployed on rooftops and utility poles, and when a gun is fired, the location of the shot is computed, and pushed to the police via mobile app within seconds. Their location computations, and methods of eliminating false signals, have been highly refined over two decades.

In 2012, conversations around the idea of replacing the SoundThinking™ sensor’s microphones with hydrophones led to the hypothesis that the system would work with minimal modification, by simply adjusting the speed of sound from air to water.

Tests performed in 2015 affirmed this hypothesis, and the results were published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin in 2018.
